SUBSTANCE - SAT, MAY 9TH @ Highlander Bar

In true Substance style it’s time to go to the left and time to go to the right as Melbourne’s most dynamic sound system gets ready to unleash unholy havoc for another fun filled night of debauchery! Leading the night’s chaos is the chief Indian in charge of our sister club in QLD Involved; Travis Lucas. If you missed his set at our 1st birthday you do not want to miss this one - his precise mixing and amazing attention to crowd control through the wheels of steel will have you saying “God damn that DJ made my day!”. Not to be outdone we sent some telegrams, wrote some letters, got a calculator, did our washing, had a cup of tea and made some smoke signals all so we could get you the best local DJs Melbs town has to offer. Whether it be the production skills of one CJ Smith (AKA Kalus), the homogeneous mixing calibration of Nexus pinup boy Jed, or the fact that we've convinced 405 Recordings front man James Brooke to offer us up a Prog Breaks set, your sure to not leave disappointed. Adding to the star studded line-up we also welcome back the essential sounds of one Mouka who with each seamless ableton mashup set has a string of thirteen year old girls screaming “We love Brittany, who the f*ck is Mouka?”.

Things have gone a little sideways in Substance HQ, with J-Slyde putting his prog shoes back on planning to deliver some phat as fark progressive sounds in the mainroom. Taran M on the other hand is convinced he is the direct reincarnation of the later Jam Master Jay and will be banging out a funk and hip hop based ensemble upstairs. Luckily though residents Simon Murphy, Rich OK and Tim Rogers will be delivering their refined breaks, tech and electro that they have always been known for, whilst Denham Jay warms up proceedings in the main room with his unique blend of Prog Psy. All in all with the party starting an hour early, drinks specials running throughout the night and FREE entry before 10 pm, Substance is going to be causing more ruckus than an epileptic at a laser show. So get ready, set your foxtel IQ to record, clear the schedule, hire a baby sitter and just get ready to go shit ape....we mean ape shit, for another fabulous instalment of the Substance electronic beat machine!

A little info about our first headliner....

    CJ SMITH
(CHAMELEON RECORDS, BUSH RECORDS, BEATGEEK RECORDS)

CJ Smith, is an artist who is emerging as one of Australia's most talented and valued exports, playing gigs across the nation and around the globe. His trademark sound breathes elements of house, techno, electro, minimal and progressive.

As a producer he steers away from the commonality of sounds, with a brilliant interpretation of emotive and melodic progressions, complemented by a brooding darker underbelly that defines CJ Smith as an artist.

Having been firmly entrenched within the music industry for over 8 years, CJ has seen sounds come and go, taking on the knowledge that the future is in the hands of the one's who feed it.

As part of the live techno act Julika, alongside fellow Australian producer Steve Ward, Cj Smith has remixed timeless techno classic 'Devilfish - Man Alive' on Bush Records, complemented by many original works found on Australian label Beatgeek Records and of course Chameleon Recordings.

CJ is another one of the founding artists to implement the direction and musical intent of Melbourne techno label Chameleon Recordings, with a busy schedule of original releases forthcoming on the label.

Australia is now at the forefront of the global techno movement, with thanks to artists like CJ Smith, constantly pushing the envelope - never to back down.

     and next on the list...

    James Brooke

James Brooke’s interest in dance music was spiked at the mere age of 12. Previously immersed in more alternative sounds, his older sister exposed him to a different style of music. BT ‘Movement in Still Life”, Prodigy “Fat of the Land”, and Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto were on constant rotation at home. Once hearing this, James was hooked.

At age 16 he sold his bass guitar, left the band he was involved in and went out and purchased some decks and a mixer and taught himself how to mix. Inspired by local gun’s Phil K and Nubreed, James initial genre of choice was breaks. However, feeling the urge to take his tastes and sets further, he started exploring many other genres and styles. He discovered he loved them all. Not content to pigeonhole himself into one box, James is now a very versatile DJ. Progressive, trance, psy and techno are mixed seamlessly together, making sure even the most fickle crowds are kept entertained and rocking.

The last three years have seen James arrival into the Melbourne dance scene. Rocking many of Melbourne’s top nightclubs such as Room680, Brown Alley, Circus, Viper Room, Wah Wah Lounge, Roxanne Parlor and many more. He has supported international DJ’s Tiesto, Christopher Lawrence, Mark Norman, Thomas Bronzwaer, John 00 Fleming, Tyuoshi Suzuki, Stoneface & Terminal, Tenishia and Kuffdam. He has played at Earthcore & Tickled Pink. A regular at Interview, White Sands and Kiss FM and also a favourite on Joy FM’s weekly Saturday night dance show “Vinylizum”. With residencies at, Nexus and Loose, this young talent is really beginning to establish himself as one of the local scene’s gems.

James Brooke is without a doubt a crowd pleaser, intuitively understanding and reading the crowd is his specialty - He always seems to know what tracks to play that will keep the dance floor in motion. Smiling faces, dancing feet and head’s bumping, no chin strokers to be seen. It’s this impressive set of skills that have seen James chosen to compile discs on CD’s such as Godskitchen, In Trance We Trust Australia, and the official Sensation Australia compilation as well. Feat’s normally achieved by only the most established internationals – or their equal.

The start of 2008 saw James launch his own record label, 405 Recordings. Already gaining the support of countless local and international dj’s, label features such names as, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Trentmoller, Cosmic Gate, alongside local guns, Trent McDermott, Aaron Camz, Dave Stroud, Wavemotion and Marsh – the coming months should see a plethora of new talent join the label. Keep a close eye on 405 recordings and its boss, as they are destined to do great things.

To download any of James latest mixes, or find out where you can catch him playing next around town please check either his facebook or myspace page..

and next up on our DJ guest list, we have...

    JED

From beautiful uplifting melodies to dirty, static, techy basslines, the constant fusion of uplifting and tech-trance sounds that eminate from young Melbourne DJ Jed inject an exciting energy and enthusiasm into every set. Predominately found behind the decks at Melbourne's newest popular trance night - Nexus - Jed has churned out live trance sets since early 2007 that have quickly established a bright and energetic future for the young DJ.

Beginning his love affair with the dance music scene back on New Years Eve 2002, Jed found himself awestruck at the majestic, neon world of electronic dance music, experiencing an inspiration he’d never felt before. From here he found a lifelong solace in the world of dance music, drawing himself primarily to the trance sound that would see him spend the next four years attending some of the biggest trance events in the country.

As the honeymoon began to offer more and more to the young clubber, Jed decided to open a new chapter in enjoying his underground music by attempting the world of DJing. The layered synths and pads of uplifting trance tied with powerful bassline kicks that took control of that faithful New Years Eve night helped ignite Jed's final passion to be a DJ and give back to the dance music scene that had given him so much over the years. Ensuring the crowd have as much fun as he does, the down-to-earth, friendly kid focuses on the affect of the music he plays, stirring emotions, stealing breaths away and leaving smiles on faces whilst having a blast in the process.

Dedicating a lot of time and practice to perfecting his skills, Jed’s debut at Interview vs. Push in March 2007 left the crowd pleading for another taste and since then Jed has played out to fans and friends alike at Brown Alley, Tilt, Bunker Lounge, 3D, Miss Libertines, Wah Wah Lounge, and Metro Nightclub in Melbourne. He has spun at trance nights with internationals such as Marcel Woods, Tenisha, Mark Sherry, Wippenberg, Kuffdam, Mark Norman and Scot Project and supported fellow Melbourne DJ's Ben Evans, Mike Nichol, Steve Strangis, Scott Bateman and Blinky whilst most commonly seen co-running Nexus in an effort to bring the best of trance to the clubbers of Melbourne.

Influenced by the enegetic and creative likes of Eddie Halliwell, the flawless track selection of Sander van Doorn and the unmistakeably genuine style of Armin van Buuren, Jed thrusts himself into spinning momentum to create hectic sets that stitch powerful bass, epic breakdowns and dirty synths together, creating an infectious and unique style exclusive to him.

     ANNNNNNNNND next up we have:

    TRAVIS LUCAS (Involved / QLD)

Travis “The Captain” Lucas is known for bringing quality underground House Music to the masses on the Gold Coast. Founder and resident at the Ruby Tramp’s Involved parties; Travis has taken it upon himself to educate people in the ways of the underground on the Gold Coast.

While spending some time in the UK, Travis was asked to warm up at a Carl Cox and friends event at Brixton Academy, turning up and destroying the dance floor. It was a defining moment for Travis which led him to create similar parties back in Australia. Recent solid performances and warm up slots for Paolo Mojo, Bass Kleph, Kid Kenobi, Janette Slack, Rennie Pilgrim, Clive Morley, Ladykilla and Mr C, have earned Travis even more air-time in Brisbane’s Empire, for the Bump n Funk, MoonBar Collective, and Sunday Roast parties.

His recent residency at Soulzbar on Sunday has shown how versatile this man is; able to push a solid groove whether playing Deep-House or Funky Tech-House. This man is one to watch.
