i am in melbourne and looking for a new suit (preferably all purpose)

i have checked out and the best so far has been calibre which are tailored really well and cut in at the waist nicely. can any recommend any labels worthwhile or even stores to visit.

    thanks all.

Try Studio Italia (similar styles to calibre) but nicer looking IMO, or ted barker make some lovley ones that,
Studio Italia ones are around the 5-700 mark ted barker a bit more, but of course; shop arround.

Both can be found at David Jones and good taylors round melbourne city.
Also try Chadstone shopping center, its about 20 mins or so out of town.

hugo boss factory outlet.... albert street preston... near the corner of bell street and albert street....

you can get Hugo Boss suits there and Ted Baker as Jaff suggested.... the Ted Baker suits are fucking cool as.... some of them are a little over the top.... but most of them are nice contemporary styles.... and you'll be saving yourself a shitload of money....

    RETAIL IS FOR SUCKERS....!!!!

calibre have really good tailors working there, its now the place i go to for all my alterations....but personally im not a huge fan of their suits.

Brodeon on Chapel St, is run by these 3 greek guys who live and breathe suits, and do an absolutely outstanding job of alteration as well as making sure it fits right in the first place...but they're not cheap, and you got to be prepared to bargain.

edit: or perhaps as others have suggested, go to a good factory outley, make sure it fits then take it to a tailor, to get it 'tweaked' and properly altered.

I got a light brown one that fits me awesome for $20 today. No idea what label it is though.

Although a while back I scored a vintage grey Christian Dior that fits perfect for $14.99

My guide to the best suits:

    - Kiton: $8'000+
    - Gianni Campagna: $6'000+
    - Hickey-Freeman (handmade): $3000-4000
    - Brioni (top line): $2500 +
    - Gucci: $1800+
    - Dolce & Gabbana (Sartoria line): $2500-4000
    - Etro: $1800-4000 (personal favorite ! - really standout, cutting edge, and unique in cut and fabric. )

    * Tips:

    Fabric:
    - Check the fabric - ranges from Super 90's - Super 240's, the higher the number the more the fineness and hence the better the grade of weave.

    Style:

Double Breasted: For people who don't have a clue. (Yeah I've seen the new double breasted ones, I still think they're garbage.)

    Single Breasted:
4 button: For people who have no taste and are living in the fashionable stoneage
3 button: Waste of time, too old, too common.....for followers.
2 button: For those who are trendy not trendsetters
1 button: Hello ! The only way I'de go. You want to stand out, get a one button with a jacket that fits like a glove and cuts in the waist like a corset, pending you've got reasonably broad shoulders, as well as abs and not flab. But make sure the pants don't have the same effect. Get something that resembles a boot-leg pair of jeans.

    Good luck !

P.S Don't underestimate the value of a good shirt and tie. Let me know if you want help on those.

imo suits are about classic style. long lasting style. don't buy suits for fads. cos in a year you'll just be old news.

for $2000 you can getthe highest quality bespoke around. forget brands, get a handmade suit thats made for you and not some generic bodyed manequin.
  • 14-Feb-2005 12:17 PM
Yeah true you can get a handmade for that price. But who makes it ? Campagna suits are custom made by an ancestry of fine napolitan tailors, with generations of experiance. As for the fabrics used in Kiton or Campagna, you'd be hard pressed to get the hybrids they use for anything under $1500. Linings are also all yukon silk, the best silk available. I've also heard of buttons of some of the vintage suits being made of ivory (though I don't condone it). Yeah maybe its all over the top and excesive, but I doubt anyone who wears those suits isn't of that nature either.....so it goes hand it hand.
