Think outside the box by looking back in...

Soma Corp and Pretty Simple team up to present the third installment of an event series designed to emulate the international artist / big-room clubbing experience, yet putting the focus firmly back on the local players - this time welcoming Australia's most acclaimed minimal export from Sydney label Future Classic, Deepchild LIVE! After a string of successful 12"s and remixes including none other than Booka Shade's "In White Rooms" and a touring schedule that has seen him play the hottest clubs and festivals in Sydney alongside international bookings at Watergate and Panorama Bar in Berlin supporting M.A.N.D.Y. and Jesse Rose, T-Bar in London with the Phonica crew, Sonar Festival afterparties in Spain alongside DJ T, and the mighty Exit Festival in Serbia where he shared the stage with Richie Hawtin, Magda and Trentemoller - this young Sydney lad has achieved a level of success no doubt envied by techno producers nationwide. Tweaked-out micro-house, funked-out electro quirk and sublime deep-house joints all flesh out the truly diverse range of his productions. Dub, Soul, West-Coast hip-hop and Rn'B, minimal techno and freaked-out post-disco are all thrown into the eclectic mix that is uniquely Deepchild.

    Deepchild Biography

Deepchild is Australian DJ/producer Rick Bull – a stalwart of the Sydney deep-house/minimal-tech community and long-time radio presence on the airwaves of Fbi 94.5FM radio, where he hosts the award-winning ‘Monday Sunsets’ each week from 6-8pm, recently voted 'best national radio-show' in the 2006 Australian Dance Music Awards.

With top billing shows along-side the likes of M.A.N.D.Y (at Berlin's prestigious Watergate club), to remix work for techno superstars, Booka Shade (voted best act and best record label, Get Physical, in dance bible IDJ last year), there's much that can be said for this genre-mashing producer. If the increasingly demanding international schedule weren't enough, a string of highly successful 12"s and remixes in 2006 have well and truly solidified deepchild's reputation as a serious 'contender' in the saturated international dance-music community.

From rare collaborations/remixing work with Force- Inc's legendary producer, Luomo, Booka Shade, to Audiomontage (aka Freerange Record's own Jimpster), Russia's D-Pulse, Square-One (UK), Colourblind (FR) and detroit-funkateers Bumper (MDEX Records, US), a steady stream of dancefloor 'dub-wise techno' releases have ensured deepchild tunes have graced many a DJ crate the world over. Tweaked-out micro-house, funkedout electro quirk and sublime 'fathomless and heavenly' (Sydney Morning Herald) deep-house joints all flesh out the truly diverse range of deepchild productions. Dub, soul, West-Coast hip-hop and r'n'b, minimal techno and freaked-out post-disco are all thrown into the eclectic mix that is uniquely ‘deepchild’. The 'unifying force' a muscular, warm and human approach to forward-thinking 'machine-music' that is sensual and jackin'! Little wonder, then, that well-respected UK music journal, The Wire, went as far as to proclaim that this sound was “as sexy and addictive as new-dub electronica gets.”

When Stereo-Heaven (the biggest DJ store in Essen, Germany) found that their biggest selling techhouse record was in fact written in a small share-house studio in Sydney's Inner-West (deepchild's "No Disgrace", on Future Classic), they took the time to make special mention of what is indicative of deepchild's head-turning appeal: "over here in my hometown in Germany, we really love "no disgrace"!! it's also by far the best selling record in our new local shop, too...from deep or tech house to minimal DJs, hip-hop and electronica fans - everybody is into that 3-tracker...really an amazing 12" you've created!"

Freerange Record's 'tech-house institution', Milton Jackson, phrased it rather more succinctly, "Oh MyGod. I think you are my new hero".

And so it continues on home turf with residencies at several Sydney clubs as well as cameos at national festivals (WOMAD, Sydney Festival, Adelaide Festival, local tech-house 'institutions' Mad Racket, HonkyTonks, Deep as F*ck, Loose Kaboose and so many more) serve to keep sleep 'hours' minimal, and the dance-floors sweaty!

Danceable. Seductive. Undeniably unique. Deepchild produces a sound and proven performance record that is classic, futuristic and vital - the world over.

Let the reviews do the talking…

"10/10 - This is excellent! Charting at no.1" Nick Luscombe / XFM / UK

"Great...really like the production, very smooth" Jesse Rose (Fabric/Watergate Berlin)

"This truly is a bullet from the underground." Onlymatt - The Rurals (Peng Records, UK)

"Thanks for a great EP, splendid production and a sweet melody." Håkan Lidbo

"FREAKING AWESOME! All I can say is - keep busting out those tunes and I'll keep playing 'em." DJ Jack Gorton, South Africa

"Deepchild had a mighty dub-tech sound when I first discovered him four years ago. But his determination, musical and political commitment, a few records and years in between on the road have forged a brilliant dance producer that demands to be listened to, for the sake of your very soul.” Phil Broeklman (Loop Records/Compost Records NZ)

“Marvellous electronic soul. Deepchild never ceases to impress.” Kid Kenobi

“Antipodean DJ and producer Rick Bull’s latest 5 track EP showcases his subterranean take on nu-jazz, glitchy deep house and the type of dub you can hear at Cielo on Monday nights; perfect for long brooding sets..” (BPM Magazine US)

“This is some seriously deep shit as I’ve come to expect… This is as deep, moody, warm and funky as it gets. Really lovely stuff and going straight in the top 5 of my next chart!” Jimpster (Freerange Records UK)

...take deepchild glorious 12” “No Disgrace.” Featuring the vocals of MC Ras Roni, Deepchild drops a cut from his “Lifetime” long player. It’s a dark hybrid that pairs deep tech and dub. It’s stands up to the good shit we’ve come to expect from Europe and the States.
As a producer, Deepchild is commanding behind the boards and he lays down complex vibes, yet makes everything sound so effortless…a bumping, deep tech mix with a groove that could floor Russell Crowe with one bitch slap. It’s that ballsy and that bad ass and I love it!
    September ‘06 http://www.dancetracks.com USA

…assured and composite work with cool programming and futurist vision
    September ‘06, http://www.gigwise.com UK

A mature and highly sophisticated album…oozing with a sense of dark, dub-heavy radicalism.
It’s a brooding, sprawling album of backlit messages and shadowy kiss-and-tells. Intricate programming on tracks such as Sometimes It’s Just A Concept and No Disgrace move the album well beyond mere post-club withdrawal symptoms, breaking into the realms of slumbering, hi-brow, techno-funk…the production is spotless, the mix is cavernous and club clichés are entirely absent.
    September ‘06 http://www.barcodezine.com UK

Definitely at the luxury end of dancefloor this smart, urbane electronica still manages to be sexy. It’s not so much down-and-dirtiness as the cool-steel sleekness of a designer droid, though; more A.I. than instinct…he works most memorably here with reggae veteran Ras Roni on the warmly human No Disgrace…It’s all about stripping out the flesh, turning a performance into a clean skeleton of sound which will run, jump, stutter and disappear with a click of the creator’s fingers
    September ‘06 http://www.subba-cultcha.com UK

The big track on the Future Classic Attractions EP was the oversexed synth squelch of ‘Mutual Sigh’ by Deepchild vs. Gauche. The good news is that it’s turned up as the lead track on the new Deepchild album, Lifetime…twisted electro reggae funk groove with ping-pong happenings, one for the head nodders. But the twisting doesn’t stop…try the go-go funker ‘Greifswalder Straße’. You can see why with tracks like these and the more Kraftwerk-House of ‘Always & Forever’, Rick Bull has come to the attention of Freerange Records…
    September ‘06 http://www.fly.co.uk UK

    remarkably vital…clockwork funkadelica
    September ‘06 http://www.2-4-7-music.com UK

This is a great sounding record. It captures some of the best moods and warmth in a funk-driven set. Very creative in an electronic sense, the fresh-sounding music comes with delicious production. He is becoming one of Australia's well respected dance producers and it's his first with the innovative Future Classic label. There is sure to be strong demand for Deepchild's services for remixing and general production work, so it should be a busy and exciting time ahead.
    September ‘06 http://www.mediasearch.com.au  AU

…a deeper than deep hybrid of breaks, electro, house and dubby downbeat without a hint of commercialism, yet a distinct German/Compost leaning. A highly electronic listen, Lifetime is atmospheric, minimal and glitchy yet cheekily able of pinching the arse of funk and soul as they strut past…impressively constructed depth, strictly for the heads.
    September ‘06 Beat Magazine AU

Deepchild’s fourth album Lifetime has just dropped worldwide (through digital download portal Beatport), and it’s hard to argue that the record is anything short of world-class. The signature sound of the man christened Rick Bull is still there, but the most notable difference this time round is the influence of the minimal tech-house sound currently sweeping through the electronic underground…

Deepchild’s fourth album Lifetime has just dropped worldwide (through digital download portal Beatport), and it’s hard to argue that the record is anything short of world-class.

You can see why with tracks like these and the more Kraftwerk-House of ‘Always & Forever’, Rick Bull has come to the attention of Freerange Records…

    remarkably vital…clockwork funkadelica
    September ‘06 http://www.2-4-7-music.com UK

This is a great sounding record. It captures some of the best moods and warmth in a funk-driven set. Very creative in an electronic sense, the fresh-sounding music comes with delicious production. He is becoming one of Australia's well respected dance producers and it's his first with the innovative Future Classic label. There is sure to be strong demand for Deepchild's services for remixing and general production work, so it should be a busy and exciting time ahead.
